To promote, protect, and advance human and peoples' rights through advocacy, education, research, and direct support, fostering a culture of respect and accountability in Ghana and beyond.

History

The Organization

Chapter 5 is a human rights organization in Ghana dedicated to creating a just and equitable society by addressing contemporary human rights challenges through comprehensive, inclusive, and impactful strategies. By focusing on both immediate needs and long-term systemic change, Chapter 5 aims to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for progress in the human rights landscape of Ghana.

Advocating for civil liberties, including freedom of speech, assembly, and the press. Monitoring political repression, electoral practices, and state-sponsored violence in Ghana.

Campaigning for the right to education, healthcare, housing, and labor. Addressing economic inequality and unequal access to essential public utilities.

Marginalized Groups

Focusing programs on women, children, PWDs, and minorities. Combating discrimination, gender-based violence, and promoting inclusive societal values.

Advocating for sustainable development and indigenous resource rights. Addressing environmental degradation and the impact of climate change on human rights.

Providing key platforms for reflection, youth growth, legal internships, and civic education.

National Human and Peoples’ Rights Conference

A national conference that will assess Ghana’s progress in advancing human rights as stated in the constitution. Government partners, civil society organizations and donors will meet to agree on ways forward to ensure progress on human rights protection in Ghana.

Ghana National Human Rights Defenders Forum

A human rights defenders annual meeting to assess the work and status of human rights defenders. It will also be a space for wellness, reflection and rejuvenation.

Nana Oye Bampoe-Addo (NOBA) Fellowship for Human Rights and Leadership

A fellowship that seeks to prepare young feminists and human rights advocates to advance human rights in Ghana. The goal is to groom younger people who have the passion and interest for human rights in Ghana and beyond. A one year fellowship that combines practical experience with theoretical exposure to the fundamentals of human rights and the mechnisms to ensure their realization.

Chapter 5 Schools Debate Championship

Partnership with schools to organize debates on current human rights topics. The participants for the debate will be given education in the area for the debate with their institutions.

Human Rights Roadshow

Every year we go to 16 communities in the 16 regions of Ghana in partnership with NCCE and CHRAJ to conduct human rights education on specific topics.

Dance for Rights Competition

A partnership with University Performing arts schools and dancers to promote human rights. Every year an issue will be identified and the dance competition will be organized on that.

Tech 4 Rights

Partner with a tech organization to plan and identify how tech is influencing human rights.

Human Rights Legal Internship

Partnership with law schools and universities who want to have their third year to final year students intern with Chapter 5 for practical work experience while contributing to the work of Chapter 5.
