The Thriving Campus Initiative

Supporting Student Mental Health and Wellbeing through Digital and Group Engagement

International Partnership Supported through Being Initiative / Grand Challenges Canada
Initiative Overview

About the Project

The Thriving Campus Initiative is a tech-powered campus initiative that strengthens student belonging and equips a whole community to respond to bullying, including cyberbullying, before it takes hold.

The initiative forms part of a wider international youth mental health programme supported through the Being Initiative, hosted by Grand Challenges Canada, which invests in evidence-based approaches to young people's wellbeing across twelve countries. In Ghana, that programme has identified bullying and cyberbullying as a national priority as more of young people's lives, and more of the harm they face, move online.

Student mental health is shaped not only by counselling services but by the everyday culture students create for one another. A strong sense of belonging, positive peer relationships and the confidence to support a peer in distress are among the most powerful protective factors for both wellbeing and academic success.

Framework

The Three Key Touchpoints

A multi-layered system designed to support wellbeing and intervene before harm takes hold.

01

A digital wellbeing support system

Designed to provide accessible guidance outside counselling hours, on a platform students already use. It offers structured self help content informed by cognitive behavioural approaches and clear escalation into our partner university’s counselling service when a student needs a person rather than a tool. It supports existing counselling service.

24/7 Digital Support
02

Student led activations

Peer led awareness and practice that make belonging and intervention visible and normal on campus, designed and delivered by students with our facilitation, materials and budget. Peer messaging shifts norms in ways that messaging from faculty cannot.
